1. What Is a Legal Text Message Opt-In?

📜 Defined by Law (U.S. & Canada):

  • Customers must give express written consent before receiving marketing texts.

  • Marketing messages include:

    • Sale promotions

    • Event invites

    • Asking them to subscribe or take action

❌ You cannot text customers to ask them to opt-in. That’s already considered a marketing message.


🚫 2. What Doesn’t Count as a Legal Opt-In?

  • Verbally giving a phone number: Not enough.

  • Heartland profile field “Opt-in to receive messages”:

    • Input by staff, not the customer.

    • Lacks required legal text and customer action.

    • ❌ Not considered valid written consent.


🛠 3. How to Collect Legal Opt-Ins in OneShop

🔹 Method 1: OneShop Signup Form

  • URL format: yourstorename.oneshop.com/sign-up

  • Includes:

    • Phone number field

    • Required legal consent text

  • 📍 Use cases:

    • Embedded in emails

    • Printed on QR codes in-store

    • Linked on your website or social media


🔹 Method 2: OneShop Customer-Facing Tablet

  • Used at checkout or customer service counters

  • Customers input their phone number directly and accept marketing opt-in

  • ✅ Captures valid written consent


🔹 Method 3: Heartland + OneShop Bar (iPad Only)

  • When checking out, if a phone number is in the profile but not opted in, the OneShop bar shows a “Sign Up” button

  • Staff can flip the iPad and let the customer input their info

  • ✅ Legal opt-in is captured with the required text


📌 4. Tracking Opt-Ins in OneShop

  • OneShop tracks and confirms opt-ins through its approved channels only

  • Only opted-in customers will appear in:

    • Broadcast lists

    • Automated text workflows

🛑 OneShop does not use the Heartland profile opt-in field for text consent.
