Understanding and Managing Text Opt-Ins in OneShop

Learn how to legally collect customer text opt-ins to send marketing messages in OneShop.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

1. Why Text Opt-Ins Matter

  • In the U.S. and Canada, written consent is legally required to send marketing text messages.

  • Marketing includes:

    • Promotions

    • Event invites

    • Subscription requests

  • Informational texts (e.g. “Your order is ready”) fall under different legal standards—but OneShop is focused on marketing communication.

✍️ 2. What Counts as Written Consent

Customers must manually enter their information and agree to receive texts via a legally worded form.

Two approved opt-in methods:

A. Sign-Up Page Link

  • Each OneShop client gets a custom sign-up link:

    • Format: yourstorename.oneshop.com/sign-up

  • Customers fill out:

    • Name

    • Phone number

    • Opt-in confirmation

  • Includes legally approved language required by texting laws.

B. Customer-Facing Tablet (In-Store)

  • Customers enter their number directly at checkout or while browsing in-store.

  • On-screen opt-in checkbox and legal disclaimer are built in.

  • This qualifies as written consent and is automatically tracked by OneShop.

🚫 3. What Does Not Count as Opt-In

  • Verbal consent (e.g. “Sure, text me!”) is not sufficient.

  • Importing old numbers from your POS without written consent doesn’t qualify.

  • Sending a text asking if they want to opt-in is already a marketing message and is not allowed without prior consent.

💡 4. How to Grow Your Opt-In List

  • Include your OneShop sign-up link in:

    • Emails

    • Website

    • Social bios

  • Offer a reward or discount to incentivize sign-ups.

  • Over time, you’ll build a compliant and high-value SMS list.
